Abner Stocking was a patriot in the American Revolution and an accomplished war veteran. Living in Middle Haddam, Connecticut at that time, he enlisted for the war on May 6, 1775 and served as a Private in the Captain Ezekiel Scott’s Second Company. He was in command of a privateer and was co-leader of the Point Judith Expedition. Commissioned Captain in Handchitt’s Sixth Company, 23rd Regiment in Connecticut, in April of 1780, he led a company in the Second Connecticut Regiment of the Alarm list. He also served in Brigadier General Joseph Spencer’s Second Regiment. He also fought in the Siege of Boston and the Battle of Bunker Hill. After these battles, he became one of Benedict Arnold’s troops in the fight in Quebec. In this battle, he was captured and put in a war prison. When he was finally released, he was discharged from the army.
